Thanks for the shoutout! I've been thinking about that thread since then too. Definitely more to say there. Sending good thoughts for you and your mom! You might like Poker Face on NBC/Peacock if you haven't seen it yet. For lighter viewing, Only Murders in the Building, The Good Place, and Derry Girls are comfort rewatches for me when I'm recovering from something.
ooh thank you for those suggestions! (I was just trying to talk a colleague of mine in philosophy into using The Good Place in his first-year seminar!) and really, counting finishing getting started as progress has been a real game-changer for me, so thank you!
The Good Place from a study of philosophy lens would be so fun. I've sometimes wished I had more of a background in it when watching because I feel like it must work on a different level for philosophy students. And thank you so much for saying that! Your writing has been hugely important for me and many writers I work with, so this means a lot.
My mom and I recently started rewatching Lost if that helps. Apparently my dad talked through it so my job is to not talk, which is difficult, but she seems to enjoy it.
I'm sorry to hear about your mom. That can be a truly uncomfortable region of scary.
She also likes news room, which is kinda like the west wing for journalists.
I’m so sorry to hear about your mom and sending you all good energy for her recovery process. I know that feeling of being in the sandwich and caring for both generations and it’s a lot. So I really appreciate your advice for these ways to shift your habits and ways of thinking around it. I also just appreciate it as I’m in a newly messy phase right now and it’s harder than I thought it would be to find my way in… sending light! And love this Bronwen Tate piece! 🩵
I'm so glad it was helpful! My mom's doing really well--she's tiny but incredibly tough, and this accident has really given her some urgency about how she's caring for herself, so I'm feeling really hopeful.
I’m sorry to hear that, I know how tough/scary that can be. My mum had a fall earlier this year while going for a walk and ended up with a fractured knee and arm. It really shakes you up so hope you manage to find some time for rest yourself during this time. Gilmore Girls is my go-to comfort watch, though there a couple of the hospital emergency episodes I’d probably skip over if I was in a particularly stressful time.
Hi Nancy! So sorry about your mom, and hope her recovery is smooth. I so identified about the difficulty of writing when life intervenes, and admire you for producing this lovely newsletter in the midst of it all.
When I was recovering from Covid, my husband and I watched an incredibly engrossing drama series, The Shift, set in a maternity hospital in Denmark. It just kept me going for at least a week. Here's the link for you to take a look:

Thanks, Wendy!

Not talking is hard
Thanks, Barry. (And I can't imagine not talking through Lost--there's so much happening all the time!)
Right?

Thank you! I think the mess can look like so many different things, but I figured lots of folks would be able to relate. xo
I'm sorry to hear about your mom and the refiguring it has brought about; this post, however, was really helpful. I hope everyone is doing okay.

Thanks so much for that. It really is wild how one moment can have such big consequences. I hope your mom is doing well!

Thanks, Roselyn. And thanks so much for that suggestion — it looks wonderful!
